SQL Server 2016 is coming: What to Expect?

SQL 2016

Hello from Solartech on this wonderful sunny day in May (or depending on when and where you are reading this)!  It’s getting closer to that time of the year when vacations start and we get to have fun in the sun! But who cares about fun when you have SQL 2016 to prepare for? Ha! Just kidding… Kind of.

Ok, really SQL Server 2016 is coming soon so let’s talk about what new features we can expect.

Let’s take a quick recap of SQL Server 2012 and 2014 (recent versions that have come out).

SQL Server 2012’s features included a set of options to improve database availability, contained databases which simplified the moving of databases between instances, programmability enhancements, metadata discovery, improved role management, etc.

SQL Server 2014 on the other hand, provided a new in-memory capability for tables that can fit entirely in memory (something called Hekaton?) Apparently this was a great feature?! And, this version of SQL also provided new hybrid disaster recovery and backup solutions with Windows Azure (training we also offer, of course!), which allowed customers to use existing skills with the on-premises version of SQL server to take advantage of Microsoft’s global datacenters – and you know a whole bunch of other IT stuff that makes my head spin – (I did not understand any of that, but if you did my friend, you are in the right field of work!)

Now, introducing SQL Server 2016! So what are the updates you can look forward to here!? Well say hello to Always Encrypted – a new feature which protects your data at rest and in motion! (I did not the laws of physics applied to data?) – and Stretch Database which lets you dynamically stretch your warm and cold transactional data to Microsoft Azure (once again, is there something that data does that we don’t know about?, I feel like I’m Russell Crowe in A Beautiful Mind and I should be seeing numbers and data figures floating around me!)

But if you want to know more about this version of SQL, click here to read all about this new upgrade courtesy of the team at Microsoft!

*Also just a selling point here: we will offer this training as well once it’s released, because you know, we’re cool and hip like that*

Ah, now that it’s Friday, and I’ve wracked my brain trying to comprehend all this information – once again courtesy of Microsoft articles – that you IT people do day-to-day, I’m going to sit back and relax and daydream about the Bahamas.

Cheers from Solartech and Enjoy SQL Server 2012, um 14, er… I mean 16!
